Located in mainland Phang Nga province and only one hour north of Phuket, Khao Lak is one of Thailand’s newest beach resorts famous among those seeking a quieter alternative to Phuket. Despite the arrival of a few very upmarket resort hotels, Khao Lak still remain a quiet and very tranquil place to be. Long stretches of white-sand beach with a backdrop of jungle-clad mountains, and deserted islands easily reached by long-tailed boat or by day excursions are all part of the charm of Khao Lak. Jungle trekking is one of the main activities, and divers gather here because of the world-famous dive sites that are easily reached from Khao Lak. There is good golfing to be had in this region, and other favourite activities include nature tours, trekking by elephant and rafting along the rivers, together of course with enjoying the sun on one of the lovely, semi-deserted beaches. Getting There Air - Phuket International Airport is the closest airport to Khao Lak, being about one hour away by road, with the advantage that there are flights throughout the day from Bangkok and from Singapore and Malaysia. International direct flights are also available from Sydney, Düsseldorf and Taipei. A taxi ride from Phuket to Khao Lak will cost about 1,800 baht. Road - Air-conditioned buses leave from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal at regular intervals throughout the day, and there are also buses running overnight. The journey takes almost 12 hours. Private minibuses and cars can be hired from hotels and travel agents in Bangkok. Getting Around The main resort hotels operate shuttle buses for getting to and from the Khao Lak Town, and have tour desk available to assist getting to popular local destinations. Songtaews and taxi trucks are also available and can be hired by the day if desired. Rental cars are available at the airports or the hotel Car Rental desk, and the latter can also arrange a motorcycle. Mountain bikes are popular, as Khao Lak is ideal for the cyclist. Weather Khao Lak’s climate is enjoyable at almost any time of the year. From November to March the weather is pleasant, with temperatures ranging between 24 and 32 deg C, and this is the peak period for tourism. The hottest time is from April through May, with temperatures as high as 36 deg C, and occasional outbreaks of rain. During June, July and August the weather cools down to a maximum 33 deg C, with occasional showers. September and October are regarded as the wettest months, but there is still plenty of sunshine. |
